Where to stay in Udaipur: the city of lakes (2026)

Udaipur is the most romantic city in Rajasthan: white palaces reflected in Lake Pichola, havelis with terraces overlooking the water and sunsets you won't forget. It is the ideal stop after Jaipur to slow down. When choosing where to sleep, what matters most is the view: from many rooftops you can see the lake and the City Palace.

How to Get to Udaipur

Udaipur is in southern Rajasthan, about 400 km from Jaipur. This is how to get there:

✈️Maharana Pratap (UDR) airport, ~22 km from the city, with direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai.
🚕From the airport to the old city by taxi: ~40 min.
🚆Udaipur City station: trains from Jaipur and overnight trains from Delhi.
🚗From Jaipur by road: ~6 h 30 by car with a driver, one of the most common combinations on the trip.
🛺Inside the old city the streets are narrow: many hotels can only be reached by tuk-tuk or on foot.
⛵Boat rides on Lake Pichola leave from the City Palace jetties.

The 3 Areas to Stay in Udaipur

The Udaipur City Palace over Lake Pichola

1. Old city and Lal Ghat To experience Udaipur

The heart of Udaipur, between the Jagdish temple, the City Palace and the ghats of Lake Pichola. This is where the havelis with terraces overlooking the water are, and everything is done on foot. The streets are narrow and busy with motorbikes, but at sunset, from any rooftop, the city becomes magical.

2. Hanuman Ghat (the other shore) The best view

Across the Chandpole bridge, the west shore of the Pichola is quieter and has a view straight across to the City Palace and the ghats. You walk across to the old city in 5-10 minutes. It is the favorite area of those who want to sleep without noise and watch the sunset over the lake.

3. Between the Pichola and Fateh Sagar More space

The residential neighborhoods north and west of Lake Pichola, on the way to Lake Fateh Sagar, have newer, larger hotels with a pool and parking, 10-15 minutes by tuk-tuk from the old city. A good option if you travel by car with a driver or want more comfort.
