Goa is beach India: more than 100 km of coastline with palm trees, huts on the sand and a Portuguese heritage you can see in the churches, the colorful houses and the food. The north is lively and the south much quieter. Choosing the area is choosing the type of trip.
How to Get to Goa
Goa is the smallest state in India, on the west coast. It has two airports:
✈️Manohar (GOX) airport, in Mopa, in the north: the most convenient for the northern beaches.
✈️Dabolim (GOI) airport, in the center: the most convenient for Panjim and the south.
🚆Madgaon (south) and Thivim (north) stations, on the coastal line that comes from Mumbai.
🚕Between beaches the usual choice is the taxi; from the north to Palolem takes ~2 h 30.
🛵Many travelers rent a motorbike or scooter to get around between beaches.
🚌Local buses link Panjim with the main beaches, but they are slow.
The 3 Areas to Stay in Goa
1. North: Calangute and Baga The liveliest
The northern beaches —Calangute, Baga, Candolim— concentrate the nightlife, the beach shacks and the largest choice of hotels. They are crowded, especially with Indian tourists, but close to the Anjuna markets and the Portuguese forts. Further north, Mandrem and Arambol are quieter.
2. South: Colva, Agonda and Palolem The quietest
The south is postcard Goa: long, clean beaches, wooden huts under the palm trees and much less noise. Palolem is the prettiest and liveliest in the south; Agonda, almost a refuge. Ideal for resting for a few days, although it is far from the northern airport.
3. Panjim and Fontainhas History and food
The capital, Panjim, preserves the Portuguese quarter of Fontainhas, with colorful houses, balconies and taverns. It has no beach of its own, but it is in the center of Goa: 30 minutes from the northern beaches and close to the churches of Old Goa. Perfect for one or two different nights.
