Where to Stay in New Delhi: Areas and Recommended Hotels (2026)

Delhi is the gateway to India and almost always the first and last stop of the trip. It is huge, chaotic and fascinating: Mughal mosques, the bazaars of Old Delhi and colonial avenues in the New. For travellers one thing matters above all: sleeping near a metro station, because that makes the city manageable.

How to Get to New Delhi

Delhi has India’s biggest airport and is the natural starting point of the Golden Triangle. This is how you arrive and leave:

✈️Indira Gandhi Airport (DEL) — about 16 km from the centre. From Terminal 3 the Airport Express metro runs to New Delhi station in ~20 min.
🚕By taxi from the airport to the centre it takes between 40 min and 1 h 30, depending on traffic. It is best to book ahead or use the prepaid taxi counter.
🚆New Delhi station (right next to Paharganj): trains to Agra in ~2 h and to Jaipur in ~4 h 30.
🚆Hazrat Nizamuddin station: this is where the Gatimaan Express leaves from, the fastest train to Agra (~1 h 40).
🚇The metro is clean, cheap and signposted in English: it is the best way to get around the city.
🚗By road: Agra is about 3 h 30 away via the Yamuna Expressway and Jaipur about 5 h. The usual choice is to hire a car with a driver.

The 3 Areas to Stay in New Delhi

Main Bazaar street in Paharganj, New Delhi

1. Paharganj Cheap and central

Delhi’s backpacker district, right by New Delhi station and one metro stop from Connaught Place. It is noisy and messy — Main Bazaar street is an anthill of shops, cows and horns — but it has the best value-for-money hotels in the city and puts you minutes from the train to Agra and Jaipur. The best ones are on quiet side streets: the contrast between the street and the reception surprises almost everyone.

Tuk-tuks with Indian flags in Connaught Place, New Delhi

2. Connaught Place The most comfortable

The colonial centre of New Delhi: a great circle of white buildings with arcades, shops, cafés and restaurants, and Rajiv Chowk metro station, where the two main lines cross. It is tidier and safer than Paharganj, and more expensive. Ideal if it is your first trip to India and you want to go out for a walk at night without any worries.

3. Aerocity, next to the airport For arriving or departing

Aerocity is a district of chain hotels 5 minutes from the airport, with its own Airport Express metro station. There is little to see, but it is the best option for the first night if you arrive in the small hours, or for the last if your flight leaves early. Beware of the cheap hotels in the neighbouring area of Mahipalpur: several post photos that are not real.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Area Is Best to Stay in Delhi?
In Connaught Place if it is your first trip and you want maximum comfort; in Paharganj if you want the best price and to be next to the railway station; in Aerocity only for the first or last night, because of its proximity to the airport.
How do I get from the airport to the centre?
By the Airport Express metro from Terminal 3 to New Delhi station (~20 min), or by a taxi booked in advance (40 min to 1 h 30 depending on traffic). Avoid the people who offer you a taxi inside the terminal.
Is Paharganj safe?
It is chaotic but very much used to travellers. The recommended hotels are on quiet side streets. What is worth doing: do not accept “help” from strangers at the station, or tours offered to you in the street.
How many days should I stay in Delhi?
Two full days are enough for the essentials (Old Delhi, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, India Gate). Many people add one more night at the end of the trip, before the flight home.
