Where to Stay in Agra: Steps from the Taj Mahal (2026)
Agra exists for the Taj Mahal, and the Taj looks best at sunrise, when it opens and the groups have not yet arrived. That is why the decision that matters is sleeping near one of its gates, so you can walk in nice and early. Here the best-rated places are not big hotels: they are family homestays a few blocks from the monument.
How to Get to Agra
Agra is about 200 km south of Delhi. Almost everyone arrives by train or by car with a driver:
🚆Gatimaan Express from Delhi (Hazrat Nizamuddin station) to Agra Cantt: ~1 h 40, the fastest train in India.
🚆From New Delhi station there are also Shatabdi and Vande Bharat trains, in ~2 h.
🚗By the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi: ~3 h 30 by car with a driver.
🚗From Agra to Jaipur it is ~4 h 30 by road, with a possible stop at Fatehpur Sikri.
🛺From Agra Cantt station to the Taj it is ~15 min by tuk-tuk or taxi.
🚶Cars do not go near the Taj: the last few metres are done on foot or in the electric carts that leave from the car parks.
The 3 Areas to Stay in Agra
1. Tajganj On foot to the Taj
The district beside the Taj’s west and south gates: alleyways with rooftop restaurants, shops and cheap places to stay, many with a view of the dome. It is the most practical and economical option for walking in at sunrise. Rooms tend to be small and the area is noisy, but the terrace with the Taj in the background makes up for it.
2. East gate (Taj Nagri) The quietest
On the east side of the Taj, around Taj Nagri and Shilpgram, there is a quiet residential district with Agra’s best-rated family homestays. The east gate has the shortest queue to get in, and free electric carts leave from the car parks. It is the best option for sleeping well and reaching the Taj in minutes.
3. Fatehabad Road More space
The avenue that runs south from the Taj has Agra’s big hotels and, on its side streets, some very quiet guest houses. It is 5–10 minutes by tuk-tuk from the monument. It is a good option if you travel by car with a driver, if you want more space or if you would rather get away from the bustle of Tajganj.

Get the rest of your trip ready
Agra is the middle stop of the Golden Triangle. The most convenient plan is to arrive by train from Delhi and carry on to Jaipur by car with a driver, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned Mughal city halfway along.
Besides the Taj Mahal, Agra has the Red Fort (a World Heritage site), the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah — the “Baby Taj” — and the Mehtab Bagh garden, from where you see the Taj at sunset across the river. These are the most booked visits:
Top-rated excursions in Agra

Taj Mahal at sunrise — opens at sunrise; closed on Fridays.
Agra Fort — the Mughal fortress from where you can see the Taj above the river.
Mehtab Bagh — the garden on the other bank, ideal for sunset.
Itimad-ud-Daulah (“Baby Taj”) — inlaid marble, much less crowded.
Fatehpur Sikri — the abandoned Mughal capital, ~40 km away, on the way to Jaipur.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which day is the Taj Mahal closed?
On Fridays the Taj Mahal does not open to tourists. Plan your night in Agra so you do not land on a Friday.
Which gate is best for entering the Taj?
The east gate, which usually has the shortest queue. The west gate is the busiest. Ideally, go in first thing, as soon as it opens.
Is one night in Agra enough?
Yes, for most people: arrive in the afternoon (Mehtab Bagh at sunset), sleep, enter the Taj at sunrise, and then see Agra Fort before moving on.
Can you see the Taj from the hotels?
From several Tajganj rooftop terraces, yes. Rooms with a direct view are few: if it matters to you, check that before you book.
